Retailer wins recycling award

BrightHouse, the national retail chain specialising in the sale of home electronic domestic appliances, household furniture and related products, has won the Best High Street Recycler at this year’s National Recycling Awards. Following a record number of applicants, BrightHouse was awarded the Hadfield Wood Recyclers Award for Best High Street Recycler which recognises the Company’s dedication to environmental sustainability.

In 2007 BrightHouse implemented a Recycling Plan to return ‘Beyond Economic Repair’ goods and ‘End of Life Packaging’ previously thrown away into landfill. These goods are now sent to the National Distribution Centre for recycling. Following a £120,000 investment, the project now saves BrightHouse around £300,000 a year and the Company has succeeded in a 95% recycling of all returned packaging.
The awards were presented at a gala evening event at the Telford International Centre and were enjoyed by the industry’s key players.
Leo McKee, CEO at BrightHouse said: “We are delighted to win Best High Street Recycler, and to be recognised for creating an organizational culture dedicated to environmental sustainability.
“The success of the recycling project required a behavioural step-change amongst staff and we are pleased by the 100% commitment we have seen from colleagues across the Company.
“The recycling initiative has been a great achievement for the Company and it is wonderful that this has been recognised, I hope we can continue this success and achieve our target of recycling 100% of all returned packaging in 2009.”
