Councils in Australia on Sydney's northern beaches will stop collecting or disposing of electronic waste, such as computers or television sets, in a bid to put pressure on the Australian Federal Government.
From 2010 Manly, Warringah, Pittwater and Mosman Councils will not accept electronic waste at waste stations or in household clean outs.
The Shore Regional Organisation of Councils says sending e-waste to landfill is not acceptable and it is pressuring the Government to start a national recycling scheme.
The organisation's President, Michael Regan, says the councils have decided to take a strong stance.
"We need the Federal government to come on board we need the Federal government to make a decision," he said.
"Its a national problem not a local problem we need a national solution and we think we need to take strong action to help force their hand."
Councillor Regan says northern beaches ratepayers may have no way of getting rid of old computers if a promised national e-waste scheme is not operating by January.
