EPA moves to recycle used cell or mobile phones

The Environmental Protection Agency in the US has extended its eCycling programme to cell or mobile phones. The EPA has teamed up with leading cell phone makers, service providers, and retailers to launch the national campaign to encourage Americans to recycle or donate their unwanted cell phones. Partners include AT&T, Best Buy, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Office Depot, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Staples, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless.

Contributions from landfill operators to the Landfill Communities Fund hit £1 billion

The Landfill Contributions Fund, which redresses some of the environmental costs of landfill, has reached £1 billion in contributions from landfill operators and benefited more than 24,000 local projects.  It was formed in 1996.

The fund allows a landfill operator to contribute up to six per cent of its annual landfill tax liability to be claimed as a tax credit.  It is managed by  Environmental Trust Scheme Regulatory Body Ltd (ENTRUST) which was specifically created to regulate it.

Chinese demand for recycled waste is keeping prices up

Greater demand from China is helping to increase prices for recyclable materials from the UK.  Overseas buyers returning in recent weeks are helping to push prices up £15 per tonne for cardboard, £10 per tonne for mixed papers and £5 per tonne for steel.  The market does not seem to be affected by the Chinese New Year and according to WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme), is evidence of improving and stabilising markets for recyclables.

New database identifies materials recycling facilities on line

Local authorities, reprocessors and other stakeholders in the recycling and waste management industry can now quickly and easily find municipal material recycling facilities (MRFs) across the UK, following the launch by WRAP of a new online database.

Based on WRAP’s popular ORIS (Online Recycling Information System), the new tool is designed as a series of interactive maps with a search function which enables users to quickly identify and locate MRFs. The entries include information relating to the material streams the MRFs accept, their throughput capacities and the output materials they produce.

New grants from WRAP for waste processing in the Midlands

West Midlands recycling firms will soon benefit from grants provided WRAP in a partnership with Advantage West Midlands.  The programme has a value of £5 million and will offer fully funded business development services and small-scale capital grants of up to £187,000 to companies investing in new or expanded waste processing capacity. Businesses will also be able to apply for one of several large scale capital grants, worth up to 30% of a project’s capital costs.
