WRAP announces waste reduction targets under Courtauld Commitment 2

WRAP, the industry sponsored association, that helps business reduce waste has announced its members' targets for waste reduction under an new agreement referrred to as the Courtauld Commitment 2.  The new targets are a 10% reduction in carbon impact of grocery waste by 2013, a reduction in household waste of 4% by 2013 and a reduction in supply chain product and packaging waste of 5% by 2013.  The new commitment was signed by 29 of the UK's largest retailers and suppliers.  Others are expected to follow.

While any target is progress, but given the amount of waste that the food and grocery sector generates, are these targets enough?

Official phase out of high energy light bulbs starts today

From today, 100 watt and frosted incandescent (or old-style) light bulbs will be phased out and replaced with energy-efficient alternatives such as compact fluorescent lamps.  A number of chains, including B&Q, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, are already part of a voluntary initiative to phase out traditional bulbs and the new legislation now makes the switch over official.

The phase out towards energy efficient light bulbs is expected to save one million tonnes og C02 per year by 2020.

Councils reject e-waste, call for national body

Councils in Australia on Sydney's northern beaches will stop collecting or disposing of electronic waste, such as computers or television sets, in a bid to put pressure on the Australian Federal Government.

From 2010 Manly, Warringah, Pittwater and Mosman Councils will not accept electronic waste at waste stations or in household clean outs.

Carbon Trust publishes energy savings map

The Carbon Trust has produced a map which shows the 40 areas of the UK which have the greatest potential to save business money by taking action on climate change. The "Cost Map" shows that collectively UK business could save over £2.5billion a year through energy efficiency measures from replcaing old heating equipment like boilers to insulation , metering and new lighting.

Alertme raises £8 million from four venture funds

AlertMe.com, the provider of smart energy saving systems for homes, has secured £8 million in Series B funding from four investors: Good Energies, Index Ventures, SET Venture Partners and VantagePoint Venture Partners.  The new funds will be used to extend AlertMe.com's product development programme, continue to ramp up its distribution strategy and to expand its existing team.

Home energy usage accounts for more than one quarter of total energy consumption across Europe and the United States.
