US DOE offers $240 million for fuel efficient cars and trucks

  
The Department of Energy in the US has made available $240 million for the development of high-efficiency trucks and passenger vehicles. The funding includes approximately $110 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and $130 million from DOE. The moneys will be divided into two areas: system-level technologies for efficient Class 8 trucks and advanced technology powertrains for passenger vehicles.

US Government puts more money behind electric car batteries

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has agreed to invest in seven cost-shared research projects for the development of advanced batteries for electric drive vehicles. The total DOE investment for these projects is up to $10.96 million over three years, subject to annual appropriations. Private sector contributions will further increase the financial investment for a total of up to $19.36 million. The selections are part of DOE's continuing work to develop high-efficiency electric drive vehicle battery technologies and is part of President Obama's energy security strategy.

Hydrogen car manufacturer plans to go open source

Riversimple, a hydrogen vehicle manufacturer, has unvieled it latest car in London.  The car will be leased with fuel and repair costs included, at £200 per month, and its designs will be made available online.  The manufacturers hope that this will mean that the cars can be built and improved locally.  The cars are targeted to be in production in 2013 and 10 prototypes will be released next year.

The Riversimple car is intended for urban areas.  It travels to a speed of 50 miles per hour

Government provides loans for energy efficiency

The Government, in partnership with Salix Finance and the Carbon Trust will provide £51.5 million in interest free loans to help public sector organisations take advantage of energy efficiency technology. Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Joan Ruddock said:

London presses ahead with electric vans

London is looking to share its experience in electric vans as the the city's largest fleet operators have teamed up to provide a forum to tell others about their progress.  The companies participating in the programme are DHL Supply Chain, TNT Express, Go-Ahead London, UPS, Marks and Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Speedy and City Hall.
