The European Commission has published a list of over 2,700 aircraft global operators who must sign up to and comply with the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012. All airlines affected, particularly non-EU operators, will have learned for the first time of their obligation and mandatory requirement to comply with the ETS.
IATA member airlines believed that the official political line taken by their association with regard to the unilateral EU action was illegal and would have been challenged by the US and other States. As a consequence and to date, many IATA member airlines have taken no active preparation for implementing the ETS.
