EU calls airlines to account on ETS

The European Commission has published a list of over 2,700 aircraft global operators who must sign up to and comply with the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012. All airlines affected, particularly non-EU operators, will have learned for the first time of their obligation and mandatory requirement to comply with the ETS. 

IATA member airlines believed that the official political line taken by their association with regard to the unilateral EU action was illegal and would have been challenged by the US and other States.  As a consequence and to date, many IATA member airlines have taken no active preparation for implementing the ETS.

China to incentivise green car owners

The Chinese government is to incentivise companies that purchase passenger cars and commercial vehicles that use alternative energy sources or hybrid engines.  The incentive is a cash rebate of up to 600,000 yuan ($88,000) depending on the type of vehicle and will be available to purchases made in 13 major cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Rebates vary from 50,000 yuan for a small hybrid to 600,000 yuan for a large fuel cell powered commercial bus.

IBM launches new carbon management consultancy

IBM has launched Strategic Carbon Management, a consulting offering can help clients analyse their carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage.  The offering is designed to assist clients in developing strategies to better manage and reduce energy use and CO2 emissions while improving efficiency and lowering costs throughout their operations. By implementing the strategic recommendations, clients could reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 50 percent -- ranging from 15-20 percent for travel to up to 90 percent for datacenters -- with corresponding reductions in cost.

Applied Materials simulates carbon free transportation

Applied Materials, the US technology company, has conducted a simulation of the “carbon-free” transportation at its Silicon Valley research campus by connecting battery-operated vehicles into the electrical grid utilizing energy generated by the company’s parking lot-based solar array. The company’s two megawatt solar power plant is one of the largest corporate installations in the U.S.

Airline Group calls for avaition's inclusion in UN deal at Copenhagen

Air France/KLM, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic and the UK airport operator, BAA, have called for CO2 emissions from international aviation to be included in a new global climate deal to be negotiated at the UNFCCC summit in Copenhagen in December. The airlines have formed an industry coalition called the Aviation Global Deal (AGD) Group that aims to work alongside the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as well as industry stakeholders, governments and NGOs, to develop an appropriate policy solution at a sectoral level.
