UK Government sets out strategy for low carbon vehicles

The UK Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Adonis, at a conference on low carbon vehicles, set out the Government's strategy for the industry.  In a speech which set out the Government's policy, he explained that there were five strands to the strategy for supporting the development, manufacture and purchase of ultra-low carbon vehicles.

The first strand is to support the automotive industry through the global downturn.

New database to compare van emissions

The UK Government has launched a new online database for van buyers that will allow them to compare emissions for commercial vans in the UK.

The online database - the biggest of its kind in Europe - has been compiled by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), and Department for Transport (DfT). It allows users to search for new van models on the UK market and compare their CO2 emissions and the fuel consumption.

UK Government calls for tenders for first "Sustainable Travel City"

The UK Government has announced plans to help fund England's first Sustainable Travel City.  The proposal, announced by Transport Minister Paul Clark, will spend up to £29 million over the next 3 years in at least one of England's largest cities to encourage greener travel choices. These could include plans to support walking, cycling and initiatives to improve public transport.

US Government to cut development programmes for hydrogen cars

The US Government has indicated that it sees little hope for hydrogen power cars as it cuts its programmes for the development of that technology in the transport sector.  The Government has cited difficulties with infrastructure and the portability of this type of fuel.  The cut to the programme is estimated to be $100 milion.

More US Government funding for smart grids ramps up

The US Vice President Joe Biden has detailed plans by the Department of Energy to develop a smart and secure electrical grid which will deliver reliable power more effectively with less impact on the environment.  The plan, funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will see more than $3.3 billion distributed in smart grid technology development grants and an additional $615 million for smart grid storage, monitoring and technology viability.  

“We need an upgraded electrical grid to take full advantage of the vast renewable resources in this country – to take the wind from the Midwest and the sun from the Southwest and power areas across the country,” said Vice President Biden.
