Government issues three consultation papers to refurbish the UK

The UK government has issued three consultation papers as part of a plan to "refurbish" the UK.  If implemented the plan intends that all UK homes be near zero emissions by 2050.

The first cionsultation paper, the Heat and Energy Saving Strategy, is a plan to reduce emissions from every home by upgrading every home in the UK to reduce energy consumption. The plan proposes that every British household will be able to receive expert, targeted help to reduce their fuel bills, new finance packages for insulation and access low-carbon heat and power in their homes.

UN chief warns against slackening the shift to a low carbon economy

The UN's chief of the IPCC, Mr R. K. Pachauri, has called on governments to resist pressure from industry to dilute policies on climate change and argued that they should continue to fight for a structural shift to a low carbon economy.  Pachauri expressed concern that even countries that have been big promoters of emissions reductions are being put under pressure on reform as a result of the economic downturn.

Global warming 'irreversible' say US scientists

A team of environmental researchers in the US has warned many effects of climate change are irreversible.

The scientists concluded global temperatures could remain high for 1,000 years, even if carbon emissions can somehow be halted.

Old faces presenting new ideas

The World Future Energy Summit is over.  It attracted a wide ranging group of people and some old faces.  Prominent amongst those old faces was Tony Blair who called for immediate action on climate change.  It is such a pity that he hadn't thought more about it when he came to office and was in office.

Blair's record on climate change is not pretty reading.  He did very little with very big electoral mandates.  Under his leadership there was no real thinking let alone action on big emission issues such as how to reduce the use of the car.

Conservatives set out their plan for a low carbon economy

David Cameron has unveiled a green paper setting out policies that the Conservatives believe will take Britain to a low carbon economy.

The plan looks for a revolution in the energy sector using IT that can reconfigure the national grid. The policies include:

  • An electricity internet.  Computing intelligence will be added to electricity and smart meters iwill be introduced into homes. This will allow demand and supply to be intelligently managed, and pave the way for large-scale use of renewable energy sources.
  • A system of feed-in tariffs.  The public will be paid if they produce energy from renewable resources
