DEFRA to update Green Claims Code

DEFRA  has announced a steering group to update its "Green Claims" Code.  The announcement was made by Lord Philip Hunt, the Minister for Sustainable Development.  The code was devised to assist businesses to advertise their green products and services with confidence and help protect consumers from bogus or inaccurate claims. It was last updated in 2003.

However, due to a massive growth in the market for ‘green’ products, the code is to be revised to support businesses and ensure the broad range of environmental claims they make are accurate, truthful and relevant.

DEFRA begins consultations over noise regulations

DEFRA has started a public consultation on minor amendments to the Environmental Noise (England) Regulations 2006.

The regulations implement the Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC). The proposed amendments will enable noise action planning to better take into account local situations, particularly in relation to the identification of potential quiet areas that will be a benefit to local communities.

Strategic noise maps for England have already been produced as required by the Directive and Regulations.  These can be found at www.defra.gov.uk/noisemapping.

US climate change legislation set for 2010

The White House has indicated this week that 2010 is the likely year for the introduction of major climate change legislation to the US Congress.  The indication follows a briefing by White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs.

The investment in climate change has begun in the US with the $787 billion stimulus bill which has allocated more than $80 billion in direct spending, tax incentives, research grants, clean water projects and efficiency improvements.  Announced programmes include:

Greentech Media reports clean energy patents reach an all time high

Overall, 2008 saw 928 clean energy patents granted, continuing a rising trend that was broken by a slight decline in 2007 and in the first quarter of last year, according to a report released by Albany, N.Y.-based Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti .

Adding up the total number of patents granted since the firm started tracking them in 2002, auto giants Honda and General Motors, led the pack, taking the number one and two spots on the firm's list.

Pew Centre sets out roadmap for Sino-American co-operation on emissions

The Pew Center has released a report, in collaboration with the Asia Society's Center on US-China Relations, on collaboration on emissions and climate change between the US and China. The report which incorporates the views of over 50 of the world’s leading scientists, China experts, political and business leaders recommends immediate action to create a new, groundbreaking collaboration with China to address climate change.
