New Earth Energy partners with Biossence to recover energy from municipal and commercial waste

New Earth Energy the UK recycling and waste management company, has announced it has partnered with Biossence, the UK arm of European environmental investors, Network Economy, to create Mersey Green Solution. This new venture will develop, finance and operate projects to treat, and recover energy from, a range of municipal and commercial wastes.

The first project, a gasification-pyrolysis plant in Merseyside will aim to generate around 40MW of renewable energy from fuel made from industrial, commercial and household waste.

Renewable energy supplier cuts its bills

Good Energy, the renewable electricity supplier, has announced that it will be reducing its standard electricity and gas tariffs by 7.5% from 31st January 2009.  For an average Good Energy customer, this will amount to a saving of between £50 and £100 per year.

Debate on Severn Barrage begins

Five proposals for the Severn Barrage have been unvieled by Ed Miliband, the Energy Minister, this week.  The Severn Barrage is a long debated idea, original proposals were put forward in the 1970's and the tidal scheme, if it goes ahead will become the UK's largest source of renewable energy.

A three month consultation period to discuss the proposals is now open and the proposals range from a 10 mile barrier across the Severn from Lavermock in Wales to Bream Down just south of Weston-super-Mare, to less intrusive schemes which harness energy in tidal lagoons.

UK Government launches a new centre for biofuels

A new centre which the Government believes will act as a hub for biofuels research has been launched by Science Minister, Lord Drayson.  The centre, to be called The Sustainable Bioenergy Centre, will have hubs at six universities including Cambridge, Dundee, York and Nottingham.   It has been established by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Biofuels have had a difficult few years as pressure from environmentaliists and biofuels impact on food prices has lead the industry to fall out of favour as a renewable energy source.

Obama says low-carbon heralds a new energy future

President Barack Obama has called for the US to become energy independent, saying its reliance on foreign oil and global warming posed threats.

Outlining his energy priorities, he said the country would not be held "hostage to dwindling resources, hostile regimes, and a warming planet".

He called for greater fuel efficiency and an "energy economy" aimed at creating millions of jobs. He also ordered a review of whether states can set car emission standards.
