UK Government announces more funding for offshore renewables

The UK Government is increasing its funding for offshore renewables.  Sea-based renewable technologies will receive added financial support from this week following an overhaul of the UK's system for supporting renewable energy. Energy and Climate Change Minister Mike O'Brien has announce that up to £10 million is to be made available to develop the next generation of offshore wind technology.

Speaking at an event which, for the first time, has  together renewable industry leaders and the ports industry, Mr O'Brien said that the UK government is determined to do all it can to meet its challenging renewable energy targets of securing 15% of all energy from renewable sources by 2020, despite the current economic situation.

New report finds cost of solar energy production falling

Photon Consulting, the US solar energy research firm, has published a new report, "The True Cost of Solar Power: Race to $1/W", which has found that solar energy companies are cutting the costs of solar energy at a pace that will soon make it competitive with grid electricity in several major global markets.

According to Michael Rogon, Photon's managing director, "companies not able to achieve $1/W through the module level, $2/W through the system level and $0.10/kWh to $.20/kWh for electricity by 2012, are significantly at risk, because other companies will get there,”.

The report which is available from the company's web site also includes detailed solar energy forecasts.  Go to www.photonconsulting.com

Aurora Biofuels has completed a successful trial of growing algae for biofuels.. The company has been running a test at growing algae in two outdoor ponds--each about as big as an Olympic-size swimming pool--in Florida for the past year and a half.

Based on the results of that test, the company expects it can create a larger-scale demonstration facility that's 50 acres in size late next year, said Robert Walsh who has recently joined Aurora Biofuels as CEO. The company raised $20 million last July to build that planned plant.
