New waste to energy plant for Peterborough

The Government has given the go ahead for a waste to energy plant in Peterborough.  Waste glass, plastic and metal are to be converted into clean energy by Peterborough Renewable Energy with approval for the construction of the 80MW energy from waste and biomass fuelled power station at Storey’s Bar Gate.

IEA Wind Energy Annual Report available for download

The recently published IEA Wind Energy Annual Report 2008 is available for free download. The report provides the latest information on wind industries in 20 International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind member countries. The information includes generation capacity, progress toward national objectives, benefits to national economies, issues affecting growth, costs of projects and turbines, national incentive programs, and research and development results. 

The IEA Wind member countries—located in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Pacific Region—provide 75% of worldwide wind generating capacity.

US up to 13 per cent of electricity from renewables

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) has reported that net U.S. electrical generation from renewable sources  includingbiomass, geothermal, solar, hydro, and wind has reached 13% of the total electrical generation for the month of May 2009.  This is an all time high and is 7.7 per cent higher than for May 2008.  Total electricity generated amounted to 40,395,000 megawatt hours (Mwh).  The increased percentage was improved by an overall decline in electricity usage.

Carbon Trust loosens its access to its interest free loan scheme

The Carbon Trust has announced that it will improve access for small and medium businesses to over £100m in interest-free and unsecured loans.  The loans are provided to help businesses reduce their carbon emissions principally through investment in energy saving processes and products.  The changes extend the eligibility for the recently expanded loan fund. US DOE backs $32 million into hydropower upgrades

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced that up to $32 million in funding will be allocated to modernize the existing hydropower infrastructure in the U.S. with the intention of increasing efficiency, and reducing its environmental impact. The announcement is designed to support the deployment of turbines and control technologies to increase power generation and environmental stewardship at existing non-federal hydroelectric facilities.
