Measurement is good

As every week goes by, a theme emerges or re-emerges in the climate and environment debate.  Some of these themes linger others move on quickly.  In the last month, a theme has been better measurement.  It has been raised in the context of water, national grids and fuel efficiency in cars. The IT industry has sensed an opportunity and groups like IBM and Google are finding ways to make metering smart and in real time.  In parts of the car industry telemetrics has been an enduring theme.

Revisit the working day

A recent study has found that people who work less have smaller carbon footprinits.  The study was carried out in the US and it concluded that if Americans worked like Europeans, (whatever that means), then America's emissions could be reduced by one to two per cent.

Government is slipping in its emissions efforts

A report by the Sustainable Development Commission has found that Government departments are not meeting set emissions targets of 12.5 per cent by 2011.  The 115 page report states that while progress has been made, the total reduction was half of what was necessary.

Digital Realty Trust, a company that purchases and manages data centres globally, has agreed to adopt BREEAM Datacentre scheme throughout the world.  DRT anticipates significant cost savings from this move.

BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.

Companies join forces to create Task Force for a low carbon future

The World Economic Forum has launched a new think tank which joins 52 companies with 32 experts and organizations. The Task Force will work with government and UN officials to develop a set of practical projects and policy proposals around the world, which will significantly stimulate the low-carbon economy from 2010 onward.
